It’s a tribute to film noir

Set in 1940s Hollywood, City of Angels follows the life of Stine, a screenwriter who is trying to make it big in Hollywood. At the same time, audiences also see the plot of the screenplay he’s working on, with characters multi-roling in both fictional and real lives. In the glitzy, glamourous world of Tinseltown, City of Angels celebrates the film noir genre in a stylish, jazzy fashion, with theatregoers wondering what’s real and what’s on a reel. So, if you want to see this seductive musical, you’ll want to book City of Angels tickets now.

City of Angels received great reviews at the Donmar Warehouse

City of Angels

The first London revival of City of Angels was performed at the Donmar Warehouse in 2014. Selling out in 47 minutes, it was one of the hottest tickets in town and received a flurry of four and five star reviews.

“Josie Rourke seizes the initiative and makes her own musical theatre directing debut at the theatre she now runs, and scores a bulls-eye winner with her first foray into the genre. Each of these actors vividly encapsulates the sense of period and polish required, and their voices are tremendous. This hugely stylish production is a Christmas winner — and should be a dead cert to a transfer elsewhere, I hope.”
Mark Shenton

“Here gets as slick and svelte a production by Josie Rourke as you could wish. If it is less than a great musical, it is because you feel the story could exist quite happily without the songs. The show may be caviar to the general, but Rourke’s production is a gourmet’s delight.”
Michael Billington
The Guardian

“Robert Jones’s design, a towering two-tier stack of scripts which, with some ingenious light play, shift us between black-and-white and colour worlds, is as delightful as the vintage costumes. There’s not a weak link in the ensemble either, and if the male principals (Hadley Fraser) are impressive, the leading ladies (Rosalie Craig and Rebecca Trehearn) are even more stunning every which way.”
