In addition to West End and Broadway premieres opening all year round, there was plenty more for theatre fans to get excited about with the latest cast recordings! Musical theatre cast recordings released this year

& Juliet

Even though & Juliet officially opened in the West End in November 2019, the musical’s cast recording was released just two days after its press night! The contemporary jukebox musical sees Shakespeare and Anne Hathaway pen a new ending for the tragic tale to a score featuring over 25 of legendary songwriter Max Martin’s greatest hits, with songs by Katy Perry, The Weeknd, the Backstreet Boys and Ariana Grande in the show. Tina the Musical

After a world premiere at the Aldwych Theatre in 2018, Tina the Musical was one of the first musical theatre cast recordings of a West End show to be released this year. With over 20 of Tina Turner’s greatest hits packed into a musical celebrating her life and career, the album features the original West End cast including the Olivier Award-winning actor Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, who won his Olivier for his performance as Ike Turner, as well as Adrienne Warren as Tina, currently reprising her performance in the Broadway transfer.

Only Fools and Horses: The Musical

Audiences were treated to the sights and sounds of 1980s Peckham, as Only Fools and Horses: The Musical parked their Reliant Robin at the Theatre Royal Haymarket. Opening earlier this year, the show’s cast recording came out on 13th December 2019, with original music by Paul Whitehouse and Jim Sullivan and additional music by John Sullivan and Chas Hodges. The soundtrack features the iconic theme tune ‘Hooky Street’, made famous in the television show.


While Company opened at the Gielgud Theatre in 2018, the West End revival’s cast recording was released on 1st February 2019. Rosalie Craig starred as Bobbie in the musical’s first gender-reversed production, with changes officially licensed by Stephen Sondheim incorporating modern relationships, with the production going on to win four Olivier Awards from nine nominations. Company will transfer to Broadway in 2020, starring Katrina Lenk as Bobbie and Patti LuPone as Joanne.

Heathers the Musical

Heathers the Musical took the Theatre Royal Haymarket by storm in 2018, but the musical continued to transport audiences back to Westerberg High School this year, with a cast recording released on 7th June 2019. Inspired by the 1980s movie of the same name, audiences can listen to the story of Veronica Sawyer, the newest ‘Heather’ in high school whose new-found popularity causes her to decide whether she’ll behave to impress others or stay true to herself. The soundtrack features the song ‘I Say No’ sung by Carrie Hope Fletcher, added to the musical specifically for the West End production.

Be More Chill

A musical phenomenon before it even reached the Great White Way, Be More Chill ran at the Lyceum Theatre on Broadway for six months, with a cast recording released on 3rd May 2019. Following a highschooler who is struggling to fit in, he later swallows a ‘Squip’ to try and be cool, but struggles to be himself.


After a limited engagement at the National Theatre, Hadestown transferred to the Walter Kerr Theatre, going on to win best orchestration at the 2019 Tony Awards. In a musical combining the epic Greek myths of Orpheus and Eurydice, as well as King Hades and his wife Persephone, André De Shields, Eva Noblezada, Amber Gray and Reeve Carney can be heard on the musical’s soundtrack, which was released on 7th June 2019. The album has been nominated for best musical theater album at the upcoming 2020 Grammy Awards.

Moulin Rouge! The Musical

Following the show’s 2018 premiere in Boston, Moulin Rouge! The Musical received its Broadway premiere on 25th July 2019, with a cast recording released the following month. Adapting Baz Luhrmann’s glitzy 2001 film for the stage, Aaron Tveit and Karen Olivo star as Christian and Satine in this epic musical that packs over 70 songs into one show! Moulin Rouge! The Musical will transfer to the West End in 2021, playing at the Piccadilly Theatre.


Following a world premiere in Washington D.C., Beetlejuice the Musical opened at the Winter Garden Theatre this year, with the show’s cast recording released on 7th June 2019. Alex Brightman and Sophia Anne Caruso star as Beetlejuice and Lydia respectively in this ghoulish, gothic smash-hit musical, following the pair as they get to know other, with Lydia loving all things ‘dead’. Beetlejuice features music by Eddie Perfect, previously writing the music for King Kong.

Jagged Little Pill

Following the show’s premiere at the American Repertory Theater last year, Jagged Little Pill is one of the final shows to open on Broadway, with a cast recording available from 29th November 2019. Inspired by Alanis Morrisette’s album of the same name with tracks including ‘Ironic’ and ‘You Oughta Know’, the musical follows the fictional Healy family as their lives are spiralling out of control, relying on one another for support.
