Opening in 1882, the Playhouse Theatre was originally built as a home for comic operas and burlesques. However, this quickly shifted when George Bernard Shaw’s debut play earned critical praise. The theatre was crushed when Charing Cross Station collapsed onto the theatre, but the Playhouse reopened in 1907 with a wide variety of productions. In its history, it’s been home to live recordings, radio and world premieres. Recently, the Playhouse has been home to Jamie Lloyd plays, including Cyrano de Bergerac.
