Since Six was first performed in 2017, it’s now grown into a worldwide phenomenon and one of the must-see musicals. With productions now in the UK, North America and Australasia, we’ve charted the rise of Six the Musical around the world to see how it’s become a global hit!
Six the Musical: The global queendom
2017: Six the Musical at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe
Six received its world premiere at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2017, performed by members of the Cambridge University Musical Theatre Society. Even though the musical was in its early days, reviews commended the fusing of historical stories with contemporary tracks and praised its slick feel. The original cast of Six starred Megan Gilbert, Ashleigh Weir, Holly Musgrave, Matilda Wickham, Holly Musgrave, Annabel Marlow and Shimali de Silva as Henry VIII’s wives.
2017: Six the Musical at the Arts Theatre
After the musical’s success in Edinburgh and catching the attention of West End producers, four performances of Six were staged at the Arts Theatre from December 2017 to January 2018. Featuring a brand new cast of queens, Renée Lamb, Christina Modestou, Natalie Paris, Genesis Lynea, Aimie Atkinson and Izuka Hoyle appeared in the show’s West End premiere.
A cast recording with these six performers was released the following year, and the songs have since been streamed over 75 million times.

So this week I want to share some of my fav pics from my @sixthemusical journey. I can’t believe I have Six more days left 😱 This is the first time we casually walked the streets in our costumes. We got lots of strange looks! We’re pretty used to it now 👑 #sixmoredaysatsix
The first UK tour of Six saw Marlow and Moss’ musical tour the country with another new cast of queens from 11th July 2018, performing in Norwich, Manchester and Glasgow, as well as a return to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. At the Fringe, celebrities including X went to see the hit musical and it quickly became a must-see show in the Scottish city!
During the UK tour, Six returned to the Arts Theatre for a limited engagement of six weeks from 30th August to 14th October 2020, however it wouldn’t be too long until the musical would royally wave back to the West End, with its open-ended run soon to begin shortly after.
2019: Open-ended West End run of Six the Musical begins
It may seem as if Six has been in the West End forever, but the production that’s currently running at the Arts first welcomed its royal subjects to the theatre on 17th January 2019. In the past 12 months, it’s been home to singalong performances, cast changes and the show’s co-creator Toby Marlow stepping in to take over the role of Catherine Parr for two performances!
2019: Six the Musical at the Olivier Awards
On 5th March 2019, it was announced that Six received five Olivier Award nominations in five separate categories, including best new musical and a shared nomination for all six queens in the best-supporting actress in a musical category. Performing at the ceremony on 7th April 2019, the musical did not walk away with any wins, however the musical solidified its status as a stand-out show of the past 12 months.
2019: Second UK tour of Six the Musical
The Queendom really took over the UK with the second tour of Six, which started at Guildford’s Yvonne Arnaud Theatre on 24th October 2019, and is currently on tour around the country to 25th July 2020. This marked the first time there were two productions of Six running simultaneously in the UK, and cast members from the West End production and the tour have appeared in both productions.
2019: Six the Musical goes international
The first production of Six to be staged outside the UK was performed at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater with a cast of American queens, and the show later received three awards in the Joseph Jefferson Equity Awards – a ceremony dedicated to productions staged in Chicago. After performances in Chicago, the company performed at the American Repertory Theatre in Massachusetts, as well as limited engagements in Minnesota and a Canadian run. They’ll reprise their performances on Broadway too later this year!
Six hasn’t just taken over on the other side of the pond; it’s gone global! Six said G’day to the Sydney Opera House, where the Australian tour kicked off in January 2020. It’s also being performed on Norweigan Cruise Line ships, so there’s plenty of places you can catch the queens in action worldwide!
