What the critics said

The Phantom of the Opera Reviews

“The Phantom Of The Opera… puts spectacle (and there is plenty of it) to the service of an exciting story and in that music is used, in a Pucciniesque way to intensify a dramatic situation. The Phantom works, despite the odd blank stretch, because it delights in the possibilities of theatre: from a vast prop elephant to the demonking disappearance of its hero through the floor-surface. It is determinedly old-fashioned but when the new fashion is for boy-meets-laser-beam, it is refreshing to find a musical that pins its faith in people, narrative and traditional illusion.”

“I’m not sure any show ‘deserves’ to be the most successful entertainment event of all time, but I’ll hand it to the current holder of that title, ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ – it still works hard for its audience… the portentously swirling keyboards and crunch of hair metal guitar that powers Phantom’s title song have a black hole-like immensity, sucking you in with sheer juggernaut bombast. Mostly, though, ‘Phantom…’ remains strong because its high production values haven’t been allowed to sag. The late Maria Björnson’s design is a heady barrage of ravishing costumes and lavish sets.”

The Phantom of the Opera Reviews

“There is still something special about Lloyd Webber’s score. Its songs were revelations that shook musical theatre, standards that entered the public consciousness. The synth-opera fusion might seem a little dated, but there’s no disputing that descending motif still conjures goose bumps. It’s wildly over the top – complete with its iconic set pieces, fireballs, and an elephant  – and some of these elements raise a chuckle or two at the confidence it must have taken to pull them off. Some of the tricks wouldn’t look out of place in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child… while we could dissect the reaction the show would get if Phantom was presented as a new work today, there’s no question that it’s still wild, it’s still joyous, and it’s still deserved of its place as the pride of the West End.”
