Wicked Reviews at London’s Apollo Victoria Theatre
Ever since audiences visited the Land of Oz at London’s Apollo Victoria Theatre in 2004, Wicked has earned its status as a classic West End musical. Based on Gregory Maguire’s novel that took inspiration from L. Frank Baum’s ‘The Wonderful Wizard of Oz’, the musical is the back-story to the lives of Elphaba and Glinda, two women at Shiz University whose respective decisions see them become the Good Witch and the Wicked Witch of the West. In the musical’s West End history, musical theatre stars including Kerry Ellis, Louise Dearman and Oliver Tompsett have all performed in Wicked, and the greenest show in town continues to mystify and astound guests. Find out what critics, Encore Tickets staff and you had to say about the show in these Wicked reviews and book your Wicked tickets now.
What did the critics say about Wicked?
“The original idea for this off-beat, but imaginative concept, came from the mind and pen of author Gregory Maguire… It’s a slick production with little expense spared in any of the acting or production departments. The scenery, costumes and lighting are, quite simply, stunning. In particular, the impressively detailed and conceptually innovative costumes designed by Susan Hilferty, are breathtaking.”

“Winnie Holzman’s script keeps the gags coming as it cleverly subverts the film that spawned it. And Joe Mantello’s production, on a Heath Robinsonish design by Eugene Lee, is packed with spectacular coups de theatre and some magical lighting effects by Kenneth Posner. Stephen Schwartz’s lyrics are occasionally touched with wit, but what he really specialises in are big gloopy power ballads that allow the two female leads to stand centre stage and soar into the stratospheric. This they do with some style.”

“After its 2006 opening at Apollo Victoria, Oz prequel Wicked continues to fill this massive theatre with an international crowd of voracious consumers, but this stylish and bombastic musical still delivers. Wicked is a spectacle that rises or falls around its central performance, and it’s a gigantic production full of bangs, bells and whistles.”

“There’s an enchanting freshness and smart edge to this classic twisted tale of good and wicked. It is a ravishing spectacle that matches the bombast of the big numbers but also provides tender intimacy for the charming quieter moments.”
