75 years after it was first performed, Oklahoma! returns to the Great White Way, revived at the Circle in the Square Theatre. One of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s earliest musicals, Oklahoma! evokes American patriotism at the turn of the twentieth century. Based on Lynn Riggs’ 1931 play, Green Grow the Lilacs, Oklahoma! follows farmers and cowboys in a musical where being friends or foes can impact lives.
The cast includes the Tony Award-winning Ali Stroker (as Ado Annie), Damon Daunno (as Curly McLain), Rebecca Naomi Jones (as Laurey Williams), Mary Testa (as Aunt Eller), Will Brill (as Ali Hakim), Anthony Cason (as Cord Elam), James Davis (as Will Parker), Will Mann (as Mike), Mallory Portnoy (as Gertie Cummings), Mitch Tebo (as Andrew Carnes), and Patrick Vaill (as Jud Fry).
The cast is completed by Gabrielle Hamilton, with Chris Bannow, Demetia Hopkins-Greene, Sasha Hutchings, Denver Milord, Kristie Dale Sanders and Chelsea Lee Williams as understudies.
Set at the turn of the Indian Territory becoming the state of Oklahoma, the musical follows Laurey Williams and Curly McCain, as the pair fall in love. However, being a farm girl and a cowboy makes for a difficult relationship to maintain. At the same time, Ado Annie and cowboy Will Parker fall in love in this Golden Age musical with songs including “I Can’t Say No”, “People Will Say We’re In Love” and “Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’”.
The recommended age for children is 12 and up. Children under 4 are not permitted in the theatre. The running time is 2 hours and 45 minutes, with an interval.
