A former politician and now a soldier, Simon Boccanegra grieves in private. Whilst a civil war continues to dominate public life, his private moments see him consider what it means to be at the heart of feuds rising to the surface, balancing life as a leader and a family man. The opera is based on a historical figure who, in 1339, became the chief Magistrate of the Republic of Genoa.
