2018 marks the tenth year of Underbelly on the Southbank. With its biggest programme yet bursting with London’s best entertainment, this year’s festival is bound to be even more explosive than the last. Open until the end of September with an abundance of international street food and fabulous drinks available, Underbelly brings the festival atmosphere to the heart of the capital. Unwind with the best stand-up, burlesque, and circus events that London has to offer, we’ve got a huge selection - take your pick!
This year at The Belly, you’ll find Ruby Wax and her show Frazzled. Honoured with the title of poster girl for mental illness; once crazy now less so, she gives a tour of the mind - how to use it, not lose it. Also appearing at the same venue is Sara Pascoe with LadsLadsLads, a show full of jokes, hope and white wine - it’s the thinking person's stag do. For those with little ones there’s Screaming with Laughter, London's original daytime comedy club where baby can come too! There’s also a host of circus acts gracing the festival this year like Elixir and Circus Abyssinia. Elixir is subversive and hilarious, the story follows three enthusiastic and acrobatic scientists who attempt to create the elixir of life. The cast of Circus Abyssinia are making their London premiere fresh from their performance on ITV’s Royal Variety Performance and following their smash-hit run at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2017.
Why not experience a glorious cabaret? One of this summer’s highlights is Barry Humphries’ Weimar Cabaret. Best known for his portrayal of Dame Edna Everage, Barry Humphries casts aside his wig, dress and wacky glasses, to curate, present and perform the degenerate, risqué and delightfully hedonistic music of the Weimar Republic at the Barbican. Prepare for a sensational evening of song, dance and excess.
Nothing beats coming face to face with the hottest musicians around or hearing those songs that you’ve been playing on repeat performed live! Some of the great artists touring the country this year include Madness, known for their cheeky humour and musical eclecticism, the Welsh singing legend Tom Jones and Il Divo, the British-based international pop opera foursome.
