About Barry Humphries Weimar Cabaret

Best known for his portrayal of Dame Edna Everage, Barry Humphries casts aside his wig, dress and wacky glasses, to curate, present and perform the degenerate, risqué and delightfully hedonistic music of the Weimar Republic.

Berlin in the early 20th century was rejoicing in a secret social revolution that turned nightclubs into hotbeds of decadent entertainment. The composers featured in Humphries’ seductive tribute to the period had their music banned in the Nazi-led Third Reich. You will hear jazz, cabaret, tango and Broadway-musical style pieces, including the lost music of Krenek, Schulhoff, Toch, Brand, Grosz and the song “Pirate Jenny” from Kurt Weill’s The Threepenny Opera.

Reawakening the spirit of this revelatory time alongside Humphries will be cabaret diva Meow Meow. Prepare for a sensational evening of song, dance and excess – you wouldn’t want to miss it.

Barry Humphries acts as veteran compere, with cabaret diva Meow Meow as chanteuse in this sophisticated jazz-infused tribute to Berlin’s Weimar Republic.

What's the story?

Barry Humphries has had a long-held passion for subversive Berlin cabaret. In the late 1940s, he bought a collection of sheet music once owned by a refugee from Nazi Germany. It consisted of works by composers banned in the Third Reich and labelled as “degenerate”, his yearning to unlock the secrets of the documents resulted in a lifelong fascination.
