Come and experience southern Italian laughter and sunshine at The Royal Opera with Rossini's gem of a comedy. The handsome Turk Selim arrives in Naples, searching for his beloved Zaida, but soon falls for bored housewife Fiorilla, to the despair of her elderly husband Don Geronio. Meanwhile local ladies man Don Narciso wants to win Fiorilla back, while poet Prosdocimo sees all the increasing confusion as great material for his next play...
Moshe Leiser and Patrice Caurier's hilarious production, here conducted by acclaimed Rossinian Evelino Pido, pays tribute to the style of Italian films of the 1960's (think La dolce vita). The cast of great singing actors includes Aleksandra Kurzak as glamourpuss Fiorilla, comic genius Alessandro Corbelli as Don Geronio, Ildebrando D'Arcangelo as Selim, the dashing Turk of the title, Thomas Allen as Prosdocimo and Barry Banks as Don Narciso. This saucy opera is designed to amuse from opening downbeat to upbeat finale. Its sparkling score includes some of Rossini's most brilliant ensembles and wittiest duets to make this revival pure entertainment and fun.
