About 42nd Street

Winning both the Tony and Olivier Award for Best Musical in its original production, 42nd Street has returned to its original London home, the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, in a revival that promises to tap your blues away! Broadway’s biggest show takes up residence on the West End’s biggest stage with an all-singing, high-kicking cast of 50! Book writer and director of the 2001 Tony Award-winning revival, Mark Bramble (Barnum) returns to his directorial duties for this London revival, honouring the work of the original legendary director, Gower Champion. Featuring the famous songs “We’re In The Money”, “Lullaby of Broadway”, “Shuffle Off To Buffalo”, “I Only Have Eyes For You” and the title number, this toe-tapping score will lift your spirit and have you leaving the theatre on cloud nine.

What's the story?

Based on a novel by Bradford Ropes which was successfully adapted into a Hollywood motion picture in 1933, 42nd Street is the ultimate American Broadway dream. Following director Julian Marsh’s efforts to launch a new Broadway stage extravaganza in the height of the Great Depression, 42nd Street looks at show business through the eyes of a young dancer. When Peggy Sawyer steps off the bus in New York City, fresh from small-town America, she books a role in Marsh’s new production, just happy to have a job. But when the production’s leading lady, Dorothy Brock, is forced to withdraw from the production due to injury, our heroine finds herself stepping out of the chorus line and into the spotlight. Will a star be made overnight? Have Peggy’s wildest dreams come true on 42nd Street?
