9 to 5 centres around the developing friendship of Violet, Doralee and Judy, three working women bored with their mundane roles at Consolidated Industries. Sick of the treatment they receive under President Franklin Hart Jr, they dream of plotting ways to kill their boss and creating fantasies over how to punish the “sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot”.

With Hart's suspicious absence, the workplace atmosphere becomes brighter and stronger, even if the women have to deal with nosy co-workers. When the president returns, a dilemma ensues. Who will become in charge of the company? Whose love will last? Who will have the confidence to succeed?
