About Dreamgirls

Thirty-six years after the ground-breaking original Broadway production, this UK and West End premiere of the sensational and iconic musical Dreamgirls continues its run at the Savoy Theatre.

With direction and choreography by Olivier and Tony Award-winner Casey Nicholaw (The Book of Mormon, Aladdin) and produced by Sonia Friedman Productions (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child), this much-anticipated production has taken London by storm. Featuring the classic songs "I Am Changing", "One Night Only" and the show-stopping "And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going" this new production features the Oscar nominated song "Listen", written specially for the 2006 motion picture. With book and lyrics by Tom Eyen and music by Henry Krieger, the original Broadway production of Dreamgirls opened in 1981 and went on to win six Tony Awards; with this fabulous cast and creative team, the London show is continuing that success!

What's the story?

Inspired by R&B music acts of the 1960s America, Dreamgirls transports you to a revolutionary time in American music history and charts the tumultuous journey of a young female singing trio from Chicago, Illinois called ‘The Dreams’. They learn the hard lesson that show business is as tough as it is fabulous. On the way up under the guidance of manager Curtis Taylor Jr, all of The Dreams’ dreams appear to be coming true – that is until loyalties are betrayed, lovers are lost and family feuds are ignited. Everyone has their eye on the biggest prize, and will stop at nothing to get it.

DREAMGIRLS STUDY

A new study from University College London, University of Lancaster and Encore Tickets has shown that watching a live performance of Dreamgirls can stimulate your cardiovascular system to the same extent as doing 28 minutes of healthy cardio exercise. Read the full story here.
