After critically-acclaimed performances on Broadway, Jake Gyllenhaal and Annaleigh Ashford star in the Pulitzer Prize-winning Sunday in the Park with George, coming to the Savoy Theatre in 2020. Inspired by Seurat’s pointillist painting, Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s musical about the art of making art is a picture-perfect musical you won’t want to miss.
Jake Gyllenhaal will reprise the role of Georges Seurat, having starred in the Broadway revival. Although he’s best known for appearing in films such as Nightcrawler, Brokeback Mountain and Donnie Darko, Gyllenhaal made his professional theatre debut in This Is Our Youth at the Garrick Theatre. Further theatre credits include the off-Broadway production of If There Is I Haven’t Found It Yet.
Annaleigh Ashford will star as Dot, making her West End debut in Sunday in the Park with George. Her Broadway credits include Kinky Boots, Hair and Wicked, with further credits including Legally Blonde and Dogfight.
Further casting is to be announced.
Inspired by Georges Seurat’s painting ‘A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte’, Sunday in the Park With George tells the story of Georges Seurat as his dedication on finishing his latest work sees him ignore friends, fellow artists and his lover named Dot. Audiences then meet Georges and Dot’s great-grandson as he reflects on his great-grandfather’s work, with generations immersing themselves in a picture-perfect life.
