Brought to you by The Old Vic, Sadler’s Wells and hip hop dance troupe ZooNation, this Kate Prince Company production, co-commissioned by 14-18 NOW, is a new musical about suffragette Sylvia Pankhurst.
100 years after women were first granted the vote in the UK, Kate Prince is set to use dance, soul, funk and hip hop, to bring to life this incredible story about a momentous hour in British history.
Co-written by Kate Prince and Priya Parmar, with original music by Josh Cohen and DJ Walde, Sylvia celebrates the pivotal role that Sylvia Pankhurst played in the campaign for women’s rights and the price of the passion and politics that ripped her family apart.
The cast includes Delroy Atkinson, Carly Bawden, Verity Blyth, John Dagleish, Jade Hackett, Todd Holdsworth, Izuka Hoyle, Beverley Knight, Genesis Lynea, Jaye Marshall, Tachia Newall, Maria Omakinwa, Karl Queensborough, Ross Sands, Witney White and Elliotte Williams-N’Dure.
Sylvia Pankhurst is the daughter of British suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst. Sylvia and her sister are also driving forces in the movement, but Sylvia, however, soon decides to leave in order to set up a party that envelopes her socialist views alongside women’s rights. Sylvia encourages her followers to oppose the war effort and hide conscientious objectors. Her party continues moving towards the left and eventually becomes the ‘Communist Party (British Section of the Third International)’. Sylvia later creates the Communist Workers’ Party and tours Europe speaking at left wing meetings.
This is the story of how political views fractured one of Britain’s most well-known radical families.
