Take a trip to Sadler’s Wells or the Peacock Theatre, two fantastic venues both dedicated to dance. At Sadler’s Wells there’s Carmen La Cubana. This sizzling new musical features Bizet’s classic score flavoured with authentic Cuban styles. The show is inspired by Oscar Hammerstein II’s Broadway hit Carmen Jones, mixing opera with salsa, mambo, rumba and cha-cha-cha and including musical favourites such as Habanera. Featuring a large company of singers, dancers and musicians, Carmen La Cubana is a sultry take on one of the most famous operas ever created, set against the simmering turmoil of Revolution in Cuba, 1958.
Classical ballet at its very best can be found at the London Coliseum. Swan Lake, from the English National Ballet, brings the timeless dance to life in Derek Deane’s enthralling production. Be captivated by the romance of Prince Siegfried’s love for the Swan Queen Odette, and the drama of their battle against the evil sorcerer Rothbart; and fall for the magnificent sight of ballerinas in white tutus moving in unison: one of ballet’s most iconic images. Beloved for its superb dancing, beautiful sets and Tchaikovsky’s magnificent music, played live by English National Ballet Philharmonic, this Swan Lake is a thrill for the dedicated fan or first-time ballet-goer.
Another English National Ballet production at the London Coliseum is the Nutcracker, a magical Christmas ballet for all the family with exquisite dancing and Tchaikovsky’s glorious score played live. More than 100 dancers and musicians bring the Nutcracker to life. On a sparkling Christmas Eve in a frost-dusted Edwardian London, Clara and her enchanted Nutcracker discover a magical world, where she battles with the Mouse King and meets a handsome stranger. As the air grows chill, Clara and her valiant Nutcracker take a hot air balloon ride across London to the glistening Land of Snow where her adventure really begins. From the sound of the orchestra tuning up, to the final bows and cheers, a trip to this show will make for an unforgettable Christmas treat. Book early to avoid disappointment.
