The student Des Grieux is devoted to the beautiful courtesan Manon Lescaut and though she loves him passionately she is morally weakand so is easily swayed when her pimp brother promises great wealth in return for her services. As this pitiful human tragedy unfolds, MacMillian's choreographic imagination catches fire, with breathtaking pas de deux throughout. Rich period designs by Nicholas Georgiadis bring to life the surface glamour of the 18th Century Parisian demimonde , and a score drawn from music by Massenet is rich in melody and emotion.
