About A Monster Calls

Experience one of the most powerful children’s fantasy novels ever written live on stage.

A Monster Calls, a haunting tale of love, loss and healing, based on Patrick Ness’ ground-breaking 2011 novel, is now playing at the Old Vic as part of the theatre’s bicentenary season under the direction of the visionary Sally Cookson (Jane Eyre, Peter Pan, National Theatre).

Following its publication, A Monster Calls swiftly became a bestseller with both children and adults; it garnered critical acclaim, including an unprecedented double win of the Carnegie and Greenaway Medals for outstanding children’s literature and illustration.

Step into another world and join Conor and the monster in a tale that has been described as "compelling ... powerful and impressive" by Philip Pullman.

WHO'S IN IT?: A MONSTER CALLS CAST

The cast includes Hammed Animashaun, Nandi Bhebhe, Selina Cadell, Matt Costain, Georgia FrostStuart Goodwin, Felix Hayes, Jonathan Holby, John Leader, Marianne Oldham, Matthew Tennyson, Witney White, Tessa Wood, Benji Bower and Will Bower.

What's the story?

“Stories are wild creatures, the monster said. When you let them loose, who knows what havoc they might wreak?”

Thirteen-year-old Conor and his mum managed fine after his dad moved to America. But now, Conor’s mum is extremely sick and she isn’t getting any better, his grandmother won’t stop interfering and the kids at school are bullying him badly.

One night, at seven minutes past midnight, Conor awakes to find something outside his window.

It’s a monster, ancient and wild, come to tell Conor tales from where it has walked before. And it wants something from Conor in return. However terrible and dangerous it might be, it wants the truth.

This is an unflinching, darkly funny, and deeply moving story of monsters both real and imagined. It drags out your saddest memories, kicking and screaming, and leaves you changed forever.
