About Consent

Eight years in the making, with days spent observing real rape trials, Nina Raine’s “blistering new play” (New York Times) Consent, is a timely, powerful, painful, and humorous piece that brings justice itself to trial. Following a sell-out 2017 premiere at the National Theatre, this production makes its West End debut at the Harold Pinter Theatre from May under the direction of Roger Michell. Raine's previous work includes Tiger Country, and the Olivier-nominated Tribes.

Please note: The characters depict and make reference to sexual violence.

"A Modern Classic...a hotly topical play with as much human life as we've seen on the West End stage for a long time" - 5 Stars – The Times

The cast is comprised of both original cast members and new additions, with Heather Craney (‘Holby City’, The Vote) and Adam James (‘Doctor Foster’, ‘Doctor Who’, King Charles III) reprising their roles, and Claudie Blakley (‘Pride & Prejudice’, Chimerica) and Stephen Campbell Moore (‘The Child in Time’, The History Boys, Chimerica) joining the cast.

Further casting will be announced.

What's the story?

Consent mixes courtroom theatrics with domestic drama in what has been described as a “tense, entertaining modern-day tragi-comedy” (Daily Telegraph).

Friends take opposing briefs in a contentious legal case. The key witness is a woman whose life seems a world away from theirs. At home, their own lives begin to unravel as every version of the truth is challenged.

Raine’s play questions the distinction between law and justice in the UK, stimulating moral and intellectual debates. This tense, fast-paced production delves into subjects such as custody battles, infidelity, post-natal depression, and rape accusations.
