Having enjoyed great success at the Almeida Theatre in 2017, the critically acclaimed Mary Stuart has now transferred to the West End. Friedrich Schiller’s political play has been adapted by Robert Icke, who also directs the production. Following its West End run, Mary Stuart will embark on a UK tour in April 2018. Taking up residence at the Duke of York’s Theatre, original cast members Juliet Stevenson and Lia Williams have returned, sharing the central roles of Elizabeth I and Mary Stuart – who plays which role will be determined by a coin toss for each performance!
Juliet Stevenson and Lia Williams share the central roles, repeating their performances from the Almeida Theatre. They are joined by Alexander Cobb, Rudi Dharmalingam, Vincent Franklin, David Jonsson, John Light, Carmen Munroe, Eileen Nicholas, Daniel Rabin, Sule Rimi and Alan Williams.
A crucial period in Britain’s history, this political tragedy takes a behind-the-scenes look at Elizabeth I’s and Mary Stuart’s tumultuous relationship. Both Queens – one in power, one in prison – fight for what they think is rightfully theirs. But the reality of their situation, as told through Schiller’s verse play, is that the trick to getting ahead is all in the execution.
