About Pack of Lies

Based on a true story, Hugh Whitemore's Pack Of Lies charts the tumultuous events that surrounded a middle-aged couple, the Jacksons, and their Canadian neighbours living in a London suburb in 1961. After the couple reluctantly agree to let a detective use their house while he investigates a Soviet spy ring, what follows rapidly descends into an alien world of deception and treachery.

Judi Dench and husband Michael Williams starred in the original cast and now their daughter Finty Williams has been announced for this stunning revival, which opens at the Menier Chocolate Factory this October. The 1983 Lyric Theatre production earnt Dench an Olivier Award for her performance.

This play is about the morality of lying, a “virulent disease that saps patriots and traitors alike of their humanity” (The New York Times), and after you leave the auditorium it will have you questioning what could be happening right under your nose, in your town, on your road, even in the house next door…

Fenty Williams stars in this production. Her theatre credits include The Divide (The Old Vic), Blithe Spirit (The Mill at Sonning), The Vote (Donmar Warehouse), Dinner with Friends (Park Theatre), Macbeth (Shakespeare’s Globe) and Twelfth Night (National Theatre). Williams’ film work includes roles in ‘Gosford Park’, ‘Mrs Brown’ and ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’.

Joining Williams is Jasper Britton, who is returning to the Menier Chocolate Factory after appearing in the venue’s production of Little Shop of Horrors.  His other theatre credits include The Libertine (Theatre Royal Haymarket), The Last Cigarette (Chichester and Trafalgar Studios), Race and Private Lives (Hampstead Theatre) and Richard II, Henry IV, The Jew of Malta and Marat/Sade (RSC).

What's the story?

Meet the Jacksons, a nice, normal, middle-aged English couple and their Canadian neighbours and best friends the Krogers. Suddenly, their world gets turned upside down by a mysterious detective from Scotland Yard who requires their house as an observation station to foil a Soviet spy ring.

As the truth about their kindly neighbours emerges, the Jacksons’ happy life is shattered and they must make a devastating choice. Betray their friends, or their country?
