About Romeo and Juliet

Two households, both alike in dignity.

“Refreshing and accessible” (The Stage), this RSC production of Romeo and Juliet is set to storm the Barbican stage from November 2018. RSC Deputy Artistic Director Erica Whyman returns to the Barbican following her acclaimed 2016 production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream: A Play for the Nation. With a female Mercutio and strobe lighting in the mix, this adaptation catapults Shakespeare’s classic tale of star-crossed lovers into the modern day.

WHO’S IN IT? ROMEO AND JULIET CAST

Bally Gill and Karen Fishwick lead the cast in the titular roles. They are joined by young people from RSC Associate Schools in London who will perform as part of the chorus.

What's the story?

What if your first true love was someone you’d been told to hate?

Born into a world of violence, Romeo and Juliet is about a generation of young people ripped apart by the bitter divisions of their parents. Shakespeare’s most famous story explodes with intense passion and an irresistible desire for change but leads all too quickly to devastating consequences.
