Punching into the Theatre Royal Stratford East, Sucker Punch returns to the London stage nine years since it premiered at the Royal Court Theatre. Asking what it means to be a young black man in Thatcher’s Britain, Roy Alexander Weise directs the hard-hitting, political play where the theatre becomes the newest boxing ring.
Casting for Sucker Punch is to be announced.
Set in south London in 1981, Leon and Troy are two young, black males who dream of becoming a professional boxer. Trained by a white trainer, Charlie, the pair end up on different paths, with Troy moving to the United states and Leon choosing between training and his daughter. Taking a jab at one another, Sucker Punch looks at what it means to be part of a system where failure can be attributed to the political climate, all coming down to one final fight.
