About The Comedy of Errors

The Royal Shakespeare Company's glorious production of the Bard's peerless farce is coming to London's Barbican Theatre following its hit run in Stratford-upon-Avon. Don't miss this magical tale of families lost and found, and not one but two sets of identical twins. The Comedy of Errors tickets are available now on London Theatre.

Shakespeare's play The Comedy of Errors is a loose adaptation of earlier tales, such as Plautus's Menaechmi and Apollonius of Tyre. It was first performed during the Gray's Inn Hall revels of 1594, and has been a popular tale ever since - including in musical theatre form, thanks to Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart's The Boys from Syracuse

The Comedy of Errors play has a madcap plot that begins on a sombre note. Merchant Egeon tells the story of how his family was torn in two during a shipwreck. He and his wife were separated, each with one of their twin sons, both named Antipholus, and one of the sons' twin servants, both named Dromio. Add in conflict between the neighbouring Greek cities where each clan resides, Syracuse and Ephesus, and plenty of mistaken identity hijinks — including a romantic subplot, and accusations of insanity and demonic possession — and you get a breathless, hilarious comedy.

But there's also real poignancy to the heartbreak of this separated family, with each member grieving the loss of another. That's something we can all relate to after this difficult pandemic year, and it's a theme that gets extra attention in Phillip Breen's assured revival for the Royal Shakespeare Company, which ran this summer in the playwright's birthplace, and which now transfers for this highly anticipated Comedy of Errors London run.

You can now catch Breen's excellent RSC cast in the Comedy of Errors Barbican production, including Jonathan Broadbent, Greg Haiste, Guy Lewis, Rowan Polonski, Hedydd Dylan and Avita Jay. There's also bold 1980s design from Max Jones, and a hypnotic score from Paddy Cunneen. Read more about The Comedy of Errors in London here.
