The Turbine Theatre will open its inaugural season with a revival of Harvey Fierstein’s Torch Song. Directed by Drew McOnie, Torch Song follows one man’s understanding of what it means to be happy in 1970s New York, with the Tony Award-winning landmark play examining the impact of love, loss and what it means to be accepting of all identities.
Matthew Needham will play Arnold in Torch Song, previously starring in Summer and Smoke as John Buchannan. Previous credits include The Twilight Zone at the Almeida Theatre and productions with the Royal Shakespeare Company including Much Ado About Nothing and Comedy of Errors.
Rish Shah will play Alan, previously starring in We Are Here at the National Theatre. Daisy Boulton will play Laurel, with notable stage credits including Shakespeare in Love, with Dino Fetscher as Ed. Casting is completed by Jay Lycurgo as David and Bernice Stegers as Ma.
Set in 1970s Manhattan, Arnold Beckoff is a Jewish homosexual, drag queen and singer. Seeking true love and a sense of belonging, Arnold faces prejudice from those around him, often disrespected by his family and friends. Challenging audiences of all sexualities to consider a gay man’s longings for love and family, join Arnold as he seeks family approval in a hilarious and heartrending play.
