About Rosmersholm

Adapted by Duncan Macmillan and directed by Ian Rickson, Henrik Ibsen’s Rosmersholm will be performed at the Duke of York’s Theatre. A play that questions our ethics and inner-most thoughts, it is set to be an interesting, daring production which is aptly suited to current affairs. Examining a country on the brink of political disaster, Rosmersholm will demonstrate the sharp, inquisitive writing that Ibsen wrote in the 19th century with a modern twist in this new adaptation.

Tom Burke will play John Rosmer in Rosmersholm. In recent years, Burke has appeared in television adaptations of The Musketeers, War & Peace and Cormoran Strike for the BBC. His London stage credits include the award-winning performance he gave in Creditors at the Donmar Warehouse. Additional credits include The Deep Blue Sea and The Doctor’s Dilemma at the National Theatre, The Cut at the Donmar Warehouse and Design for Living at the Old Vic.

Hayley Atwell will play Rebecca West. On stage, she has recently starred in Measure for Measure at the Donmar Warehouse opposite Jack Lowden. However, audiences may recognise her for playing Peggy Carter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe series including Ant-Man and Avengers: Age of Ultron. She has also starred in The Duchess, with Atwell receiving two best supporting actress nominations for her performance.

Further casting includes Giles Terera, Lucy Briers, Jake Fairbrother, Peter Wight, Gavin Antony, Ebony Buckle, Piers Hampton, Maureen Hibbert, Robyn Lovell and Alice Vilanculo.

What's the story?

John Rosmer supports the newly elected government even with its atypical views. While he is a leading figure in his community, Rosmer is dealing with internal struggles that plague his life on a daily basis. Dealing with his wife’s death at the same time as a blooming friendship to Rebecca West, he attempts to escape the guilt by proposing to Rebecca in a bid to start over again. When Rebecca rejects his proposal, the pair break down until they make the ultimate bond.
