In the first half are two superb testaments to the sheer range of his creative talent. Ashton's passion for symmetry inspired the elegant and nostalgic Scenes de ballet, set to a wonderfully piquant score by Stravinsky , while Five Brahms Waltzes in the Manner Of Isadora Duncan is a fluid and sensual barefoot solo that revels in the sheer joy of movement. At the heart of the programme is one of his greatest works, Symphonic Variations - a sublime homage to classical ballet that is beautifully complemented by the rich, anguished lyricism of Franck's similarly titled score. Completing this Ashton celebration is his tender and gently humourous portrayal based on Turganev's poignant romance, A month in the country, set to music by Chopin. A transcendent evening for all serious dance lovers.
