From the authors of the legendary musical Fiddler on the Roof comes the musical comedy She Loves Me, revived at the Menier Chocolate Factory in time for Christmas! Based on the play Parfumerie by Hungarian playwright Miklós László, we are transported to Maraczek’s perfumery in Budapest for a romantic tale made in musical theatre heaven.
Following his successful productions of Little Shop of Horrors, Sweet Charity and Candide at the south London venue, director Matthew White returns to direct Broadway star and Olivier Award nominee Scarlett Strallen in this surprisingly relevant exploration of wooing in the workplace and secret identities.
This much loved Broadway classic features the famous songs ‘Tonight at Eight’, ‘Will He Like Me?’, ‘Vanilla Ice Cream’, ‘A Trip to the Library’ and the glorious title song – this delightful show is guaranteed to warm your soul of a winter evening!
Scarlett Strallen (Mary Poppins, A Chorus Line, Candide, Singin’ in the Rain) returns to the Menier Chocolate Factory to star as Amalia Balash, and is joined by Mark Umbers (Sweet Charity, Merrily We Roll Along – both at the Menier Chocolate Factory) as Georg Nowack. Two-time Olivier Award-nominee Katherine Kingsley stars as Ilona with Dominic Tighe as Kodaly.
Amalia Balash is the new clerk at Maraczek’s Perfumery and Georg Nowack isn’t happy about it. She has got on his nerves since day one, and the feeling is entirely reciprocated – she’s stuck up, and he’s arrogant and mean. Apparently. But their mutual dislike hides the trait that they have in common – both are members of a lonely hearts club, writing rapturously to romantic pen pals. They live for the love letters they receive from their anonymous secret admirers, and long for the day when they will finally meet their ‘dear friend’. Will they still be enamoured when their first date arrives? Or will there be more deception? Maybe they are not in love with the person on paper after all – maybe their true love has been under their nose all along, just masked by the perfume…
