And I am telling you... They are FINALLY coming to London! We may have to wait until 2016 or even 2017, but the seven-time Tony Award-winning Broadway musical 'DREAMGIRLS' will at last have its long-awaited West End premiere, according to the Daily Mail.
If that wasn't enough, Tony Award winner Casey Nicholaw, who has directed a string of Broadway mega-hits including 'The Book of Mormon,' Disney's 'Aladdin,' and 'Elf the Musical,' is in negotiations to cross the pond and direct the London premiere of 'DREAMGIRLS'!
The musical, which features music by Henry Krieger and a book and lyrics by Tom Eyen, centers on a singing trio of black female divas (baring an uncanny resemblance to The Supremes), who are eventually torn apart by fame, fortune, back-stabbing and... (yep, you guessed it!)... men!
The 2006 movie adaptation garnered Jennifer Hudson a well-deserved Oscar for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role. It also starred a whole bunch of very talented performers including Jamie Foxx, Beyoncé Knowles, Anika Noni Rose, Danny Glover and Eddie Murphy, and featured a brand new song written especially for Beyoncé called 'Listen.' We wonder if the new ballad will also make its stage debut in London?
After its hugely successful Broadway premiere in 1981, it was revived for a second production in 1987. But alas, they never ventured over to the Big Smoke (and glitz and glamour) of London. So the West End premiere would also mark Dreamgirls' 35th Anniversary! Man, we've been waiting a long time!
Now all we have to do is begin the speculations on who will tread the boards at the London premiere? Jennifer Hudson is making her Broadway debut this year in the musical adaptation of 'The Color Purple' and has in the past expressed a desire to do a West End musical. Could this be the perfect fit for J-Hud? And what about 'The Bodyguard' alumni Heather Headley, Alexandra Burke and current 'Memphis' star Beverley Knight?
DREAMGIRLS... I love you I do!
