Here's another awards ceremony to add to your calendar: the South Bank Sky Arts Awards nominees have been announced, shining a light on the really great stuff in British culture this past year. And the theatre accolade looks like it's going to be an exciting battle of West End titans.
Nominated in the theatre category are the popular new musical Matilda and sell-out comedy One Man, Two Guvnors. With Matilda having just extended well into 2013 and One Man, Two Guvnors enjoying a run at its third home, the Theatre Royal Haymarket, they both are fighting contenders to take the title.
The two shows are also competing with Constellations, a Royal Court Theatre play that tells a contemporary love story (with some quantum philosophy thrown in for good measure).
The South Bank Awards were first started 15 years ago as part of Melvyn Bragg's South Bank Show. When the TV series got the axe in 2010, satellite TV network Sky Arts rescued the ceremony so it could continue as a stand-alone event. The awards are highly respected, and they're always a classy affair – this year they're being held at the Dorchester Hotel.
