The Bodyguard has been on the rumour circuit for a couple of years, but the buzz grew after Whitney Houston's tragic death in February.
But the news is now official: it's opening at the Adelphi Theatre from 6 November 2012. And it's set to be the event of the year.
Cast your mind back to 1992…
You may remember The Bodyguard becoming the breakout film of that year. Not only did it pair up Hollywood's hottest actor Kevin Costner and international triple-platinum star Whitney Houston, it featured a killer soundtrack that is the fourth bestselling album of all time.
To refresh your memory, Costner played handsome security expert Frank Farmer, a former secret service agent who is hired by pop singer Rachel Marron (Houston in her film debut) after she receives death threats from an obsessed fan.
The Bodyguard soundtrack shifted a whopping 44 million copies worldwide – Houston's cover of Dolly Parton's I Will Always Love You sold 12 million copies as a single alone – almost overshadowing the film itself. With that success, it was a no-brainer that the show would feature much of the film’s music, plus other Whitney hits including One Moment In Time, I Wanna Dance With Somebody and Saving All My Love For You.
Big Shoes to Fill
Trinidad-born actress Heather Headley has big shoes to fill, but is certainly up to the task of playing Rachel Marron. She was the first person to play Nala in Disney’s The Lion King on Broadway before going on to star in Tim Rice and Elton John's Aida for which she won a coveted Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical in 2000.
And the production's in the great hands of director Thea Sharrock, who brought big names like Daniel Radcliffe and Keira Knightley to the West End stage.
