A Doll’s House marks Rachel O’Riordan’s directorial debut at the Lyric Hammersmith, with a new adaptation by Tanika Gupta. Now set in 19th century India, the now-named Niru has to deal with secrets coming out in the open in what is set to offer a bold, female perspective on a regularly revived play.
Anjana Vasan will play Niru, known as Nora in the original Ibsen production. Her previous theatre credits include Summer and Smoke, Rutherford and Son and Shakespeare’s Globe productions of King Lear and Midsummer’s Night Dream.
The cast is completed by Elliot Cowan, Arinder Sadhra, Colin Tierney, Tripti Tripuraneni and Assad Zaman.
There will be a post-show question and answer session on 17th September and 24th September.
Tanika Gupta’s reimagination of A Doll’s House sees the play set in Calcutta. When Tom, an English colonial bureaucrat marries Niru, a young Bengali woman, will their mixed-race relationship be able to survive in 19th century India? Gender politics, as well as clash of identities come to the fore in a reawakened version of an Ibsen classic, where Niru has to decide whether to follow others or be independent.
